Plan 3550Alternative Low-cost Swine Housing
Producers may have different objectives for raising feeder pigs in outside shelters. One objective is to feed outside as a complete alternative to indoor production. Another objective may be to add production capacity to current facilities with minimal capital investment, either for the short or long term. Low-cost housing alternatives can also be used to reduce stocking densities in conventional housing during hot summer months when pigs require more space. This allows the shelter to be used for grain or machinery storage during winter months. The outdoor shelters could also allow existing facilities to be emptied for periodic clean out and/or renovations. The approach and planning needed to reach these objectives will be different for each case. Whatever the objective, the type of housing selected must be able to meet the needs of the pigs so they can thrive and profit the producer.
